Artificial intelligence is being woven into data quality tools faster than governance frameworks can keep up. ISO/IEC 42001:2023 exists to answer exactly that question. Published in December 2023 by the International Organization for Standardization, it is the world's first international standard for Artificial Intelligence Management Systems. It establishes a framework for how organizations govern AI across its full lifecycle — from design and development through deployment, monitoring, and eventual decommissioning — with verifiable requirements for transparency, accountability, risk management, and human oversight.
We are proud to announce that Validatar has achieved ISO/IEC 42001:2023 certification, issued February 11, 2026, by Prescient Security LLC, an IAS-accredited third-party certification body. We believe this certification represents a meaningful commitment to our customers — not a marketing badge — and we want to explain what it covers, what it required, and what it reflects about how we think AI should work in data quality.
What ISO/IEC 42001 Covers — and Why It Matters
ISO/IEC 42001 is not a product certification. It does not certify that a specific AI feature works correctly. It certifies that an organization has implemented a governance system — policies, processes, controls, and monitoring — that ensures AI is developed and used responsibly throughout its lifecycle.
For data quality teams evaluating platforms, this distinction matters. A vendor that claims its AI is "responsible" and a vendor whose AI governance practices have been independently audited against an international standard are not the same claim.
Validatar's implementation of the standard addresses six areas central to the framework's requirements:
- Risk identification and mitigation across the AI lifecycle, including testing methods that ensure safety and system integrity
- Post-deployment monitoring for vulnerabilities, emerging risks, misuse, and unintended consequences
- Transparency about what AI systems do, what they don't do, and where their limitations lie
- Governance policies that establish documented accountability throughout the AI lifecycle

Each area requires documented policies, measurable objectives, and evidence of implementation — all reviewed during an independent certification audit.
For enterprise organizations already working within the EU AI Act's transparency and human oversight requirements, the NIST AI Risk Management Framework, or model governance expectations under SR 11-7 (US financial services), ISO/IEC 42001 operates as a complementary framework. It provides a structured management system to operationalize the governance principles those frameworks articulate at a policy level — and it carries the added credibility of independent third-party audit verification.
Validatar's Certification Scope
Validatar's ISO/IEC 42001:2023 certification (Certificate No. PS42001-44, valid through February 10, 2029) covers the Artificial Intelligence Management System supporting the Validatar data quality platform in three distinct roles: AI Producer, AI System Integrator, and AI User.
That scope is broader than it might appear. Being certified as an AI Producer means the AI capabilities we build into Validatar — test recommendations, anomaly detection, data profiling — are governed from design through deployment. Being certified as an AI System Integrator means the third-party AI components and models we incorporate are subject to the same governance standards as the capabilities we build ourselves. Being certified as an AI User means even our internal application of AI tools in service of our customers falls under the management system.
The certification covers four departments: Product, Development, Customer Success, and IT Support. Responsible AI cannot be delegated to a single team — it requires organizational commitment across the people who build the platform, the people who support it, and the people who bring it to customers.
Getting here required building out formal policies, defining measurable AI objectives, establishing post-deployment monitoring processes, and passing an independent audit conducted by Prescient Security LLC. It was not a checkbox exercise.
Our Vision for AI in Data Quality
Certification is a milestone, not a destination. The more important question is what we believe responsible AI in data quality actually looks like in practice.
Our position is straightforward: AI should expand what data teams can cover, not replace the judgment they apply to what they find.
Data quality work at scale has a coverage problem. A modern data environment — dozens of source systems, hundreds of tables, thousands of columns, multiple load patterns — generates more surface area than any team can manually inspect after every load cycle. The value of AI in this context is its ability to close the coverage gap: profiling new data assets automatically, recommending tests based on schema structure and historical patterns, flagging anomalies that fall outside expected distributions, and prioritizing where human attention is most needed.
But anomalies are not the same as issues. A distribution shift might reflect a business event, a seasonal pattern, or a genuine data defect. AI surfaces the signal. A human decides what it means and what action to take.
This is what we mean by keeping a human in the loop — not as a compliance requirement, but as a design principle. AI accelerates coverage. People make decisions. The platform should make both possible: broad automated surveillance at machine speed, and clear, actionable reporting that puts the right information in front of the right person to act on it.
